January 2026 Key Tax Deadlines for Businesses

January 2026 presents critical tax deadlines for small businesses, employers, and self-employed professionals such as farmers and fishermen. By understanding and preparing for these deadlines, businesses can maintain compliance and avoid penalties.

January 15 - Monthly Employer Deposit:

For employers bound by monthly deposit obligations, the deadline for December 2025 deposits of Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income tax is January 15. Additionally, nonpayroll withholding for December must also be submitted by this date if applicable. All employment tax deposits must be submitted electronically, except when a return period deposit liability is under $2,500, allowing for quarterly or annual payments with the return.

January 15 - Estimated Tax for Farmers and Fishermen:

Those working in agriculture or fisheries should remit their 2025 estimated taxes using Form 1040-ES by this date. However, if they do not, they should file their income tax return (Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR) and pay any due taxes by March 2, 2026, to avoid additional estimated tax penalties. The alternative is to ensure the estimated tax is paid by January 16.

Should any due dates fall on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, they will be adjusted to the next business day that is neither a weekend nor a holiday.
