Where’s My Refund? A Guide for North Carolina Taxpayers

At Adkin CPA, our goal is to ensure you have a clear picture of your tax position with no surprises. Once your return is filed, the logical next question is: "When will the funds arrive?" As many of our Chapel Hill clients know, the IRS has significantly shifted gears toward digital efficiency. To reduce the risk of lost mail and lower processing costs, the agency is moving away from paper checks in favor of electronic transfers and direct deposits.

Whether you are a small business owner in North Carolina managing cash flow or an individual anticipating a return, the most reliable way to track your money is online.

The Best Way to Track Your Funds

For the most accurate updates, we recommend using the Where’s My Refund? tool on the IRS website. Whether you split your refund across multiple accounts or directed it to a single bank, this system provides 24/7 access to your status without the need to sit on hold with an agent.

Understanding the Timeline
If we e-filed your return, you can typically check your status 24 hours after the IRS acknowledges receipt. For those few who still file paper returns, the wait time before data appears is roughly four weeks. The good news is that nine out of 10 e-filed returns with direct deposit are processed in fewer than 21 days.

What You Need to Check Your Status

To keep your data secure, the system requires specific verification. Have a copy of your federal tax return ready and enter:

  • Your Social Security Number (or ITIN),

  • The tax year (2025, 2024, or 2023),

  • Your filing status (e.g., Married Filing Jointly, Head of Household, etc.), and

  • The exact refund amount in whole dollars.

Once verified, you will see one of three stages: Received, Approved, or Sent. Keep in mind that once the status changes to "Sent," it may still take your bank up to 5 days to post the funds.

Troubleshooting and Mobile Options

The Where’s My Refund? tool is robust. It offers links to resolve specific processing holds and is accessible for visually impaired taxpayers using screen readers. If you prefer mobile access, the IRS2Go app is available for Apple and Android devices.

When should you worry?
Generally, you should only initiate a refund trace if you have not received your funds within 28 days of the mailing date listed on the tool. There is rarely a need to call the IRS directly unless the online system prompts you to do so; the phone agents generally have the same information you can see online.

As a "Best of Chapel Hill" winner, we pride ourselves on building long-lasting relationships. If you encounter complex issues with your return or need help planning for the year ahead, please contact the team at Adkin CPA.
