April 15 Tax Deadlines: A Checklist for Small Businesses

For small business owners, the spring season brings a flurry of activity, and keeping track of compliance dates is rarely at the top of the priority list. However, the April 15, 2026, deadline for your 2025 federal tax return is rapidly approaching. Whether you are ready to file and pay your balance, or you need to request an automatic extension, staying ahead of this date is essential to maintaining financial health.

Critical April 15 Deadlines Beyond Your Tax Return

Filing your Form 1040 or business equivalent is just one piece of the puzzle. At Adkin CPA, our goal is to give North Carolina small businesses a clear picture of their tax position so there are no surprises. Keep in mind that April 15 also serves as the cut-off for several other critical financial tasks:

  • Tax Year 2025 Balance-Due Payments: An extension to file is never an extension to pay. If you expect to owe taxes, you must estimate the amount and submit payment with your extension request. Any unpaid balance will immediately begin accruing late payment penalties and interest.
  • 2025 IRA Contributions: April 15 is your final opportunity to fund a traditional or Roth IRA for the 2025 tax year. This deadline remains firm even if you file for a tax return extension.
  • 2022 Refund Claims: The three-year statute of limitations for amending a 2022 return closes on April 15, 2026. If you are owed a refund from that year, missing this date means forfeiting that money entirely.

Foreign Accounts and Estimated Payments

  • Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts Report (FBAR): If you held $10,000 or more in foreign accounts at any point during 2025, your FBAR is due alongside your tax return. An automatic extension to October 15 is available, but strict compliance is necessary to avoid severe penalties.
  • First Quarter 2026 Estimated Taxes: Self-employed individuals must submit their first quarter 2026 estimated payment by April 15. Because these estimates are often based on your 2025 liability, we may need to calculate your prior-year taxes now, even if your actual filing is extended to October.
